Adoption Process Puppy Matching FAQ

When do we choose our puppy?

Puppy matching takes place at around 6 weeks of age, when personalities, temperaments, and features are much more developed. This timing is always after we’ve held the puppy visit date and our final vet visit so we can include all of this information.

Can I pick my puppy earlier?

You are welcome to keep your eyes on your favorites, but we never lock anyone into a puppy choice earlier than this. Puppies change quickly in their early weeks, and early favorites are often not the same by the time personalities emerge.

Will I get to meet the puppies?

Yes! Although some families can’t make this date, we host a visitation weekend day (when possible) so families have the option to meet the puppies before making their selections. We provide weekly photos or videos in each week’s pup-dates as well as our private family Facebook page so those unable to attend the visit can watch them develop.

How do I choose my puppy?

After the visit and final vet check, we'll send each family a selection google form listing your top 4–5 favorite puppies, along with any preferences (gender, coat, size, temperament, etc.) and dynamics of your home.

How are puppies matched to families?

We use a thoughtful combination of:

  • Your preferences

  • Temperament testing

  • Our hands-on experience with each puppy

Our goal is to create the best lifelong match for both you and your puppy.

Does deposit order matter?

Sometimes. If multiple families have the same preferences and are equally suited for the same puppy, deposit order is used as a tie-breaker—but it is not the main factor in matching. Most families end up with different favorites!

Do you keep any puppies?

We reserve the right to first or second pick of the litter for future breeding prospects.

When will I find out my puppy?

Matches are finalized after temperament testing and the final vet visit. You’ll typically hear from us at the end of the week after selection forms are filled out.

What if I don’t get my first or second choice?

We ask that families stay open to a number of puppies. It’s rare for families to feel disappointed since we match you to one of your favorites (when possible) . There are usually a few perfect fits for families.  Our process is designed with that goal in mind.

Is there a “last pick” puppy?

No, there is no such thing as a last pick in our program. Every family has input, and most receive one of their top choices.

Why do you match puppies instead of letting us just pick in order?

Because temperament matters. By guiding the process, we’re able to match each puppy to the home where they will truly thrive, which means happier families and well-adjusted dogs.
